Topfield TF5800PVR By Mark Nelson The Topfield PF5800 is a dual tuner digital video recorder and Freeview box. This basically means that it is capable of receiving all the Freeview TV and radio stations. It also has card slots so that you can subscribe to premium content such as Topup TV. The dual tuners allow two channels to be recorded at the same time. It is also possible to watch a previously recorded program while recording two others and, in some circumstances, watch a live program while recording two others. This last feature is limited to watching a channel on the same multiplex (or channel group) as on of the channels being recorded. It is also possible to start watching a program that is being recorded before it has actually finished. This is often referred to as time shifting. It is possible to pause and rewind live TV but using this feature does mean the hard drive in the machine is spinning all the time which can be a bit noisy. It's quite easy to turn this feature off though. Even though the Topfield has two tuners only one aerial connection is required. This also had a pass through so you can connect the TV using the same aerial too. The Topfield can be connected to the TV using a SCART lead (there's also a SCART connection for a VCR should you need one), S-Video, Composite Video and an RF out. Most people will only need the SCART connection but the RF is useful for older TVs with limited connection option. There are also stereo and S/PDIF connections for connecting the Topfield to an amplifier or AV receiver for improved sound. One of the unique features of the Topfield is it's ability to be programmed by anybody who wants to add improvements. There are a lot TAPS (as the modifications are know) on the internet.
